What is a deadbolt?
A deadbolt is a common lock used to secure your place. Deadbolt locks are secure and sturdy. The deadbolt has a lock body and a long, thick metal bolt that extends to the edge of the door and locks into the strike plate on either side of the door. There are several types of deadbolts: single cylinder and double cylinder, which simply refers to whether or not you need a key to open it from inside as well as outside.
Deadbolt Types
Single Cylinder Deadbolt
A single cylinder deadbolt is a standard door lock. With a key from the outside and a turn of the knob from inside, this type of deadbolt can be locked from either side. They are common for front and back doors, as well as bedroom doors.
Double Cylinder Deadbolt
A double cylinder deadbolt is opened by a key from either side, with no thumb turn option in between. Some models have an emergency release inside in case you forget your key in the lock. Double cylinders are more secure than single cylinder locks because they require a key on both sides of the door in order to be unlocked. This means that even maintenance workers or delivery people can’t get access without you being able to unlock it from your end first.
Digital Deadbolt – Keyless Deadbolt
Digital deadbolt locks are typically a single cylinder style lock with an electronic keypad in place of a doorknob. Pressing the numbers on the keypad activates the lock and allows you to open your door from either side without having to use a physical key or touch any metal parts. When you press the number buttons, small electric currents activate magnets within the locking mechanism that repel one another and unlock. The great thing about this type of deadbolt is that it can be programmed for up to 30 unique users so that multiple people have access without compromising its overall security. This means that while some people may have an assigned code, some may just have access whenever they need it – such as when delivering packages or performing work around your home while you’re away at work.
Lockable Thumb Turn Deadbolt
If you like the idea of a digital deadbolt but really want the feeling of having something physical to lock, consider a lockable thumb turn deadbolt. This style has all of the benefits and features of a traditional thumb turn deadbolt, such as easily locking and unlocking your door from one side with just a quick rotation, but it also comes with an electronic keypad that allows access for up to 30 different users. Rather than pushing numbers, though, you’ll be using this keypad in order to open the door in the same way that you would if it were simply a standard thumb turn without any power source behind it.
Vertical Deadbolt
Vertical deadbolts are another type of lock that is typically installed on an exterior door. Unlike the standard horizontal deadbolt, which is locked and unlocked using a key from the outside of your home, this style is opened by rotating the lock vertically to allow for more clearance in between it and your door frame when locking or unlocking. This makes them great for places where there’s not much room or you need to be able to move the lock around in order to get your door open.
Keyed Alike Deadbolts
Having more than one key for your home is convenient, but having two that are completely identical is just asking for trouble. Instead of simply making copies of your original key and handing them out so that you don’t have to go through the hassle of changing all the locks when you lose a key, consider getting a keyed alike deadbolt instead. This type allows for more than one person to have access to your home without compromising its security by allowing each user to use their own unique key and code.

The old lock on our back door had been causing problems for years. Alex examined it and proposed a solution to fix the problem permanently. It's now working smoothly like when we first installed it!
